Dance in Art I: Impressionism, Post Impressionism and Cubism

Dance in Art I: Impressionism, Post Impressionism and Cubism Online

At the turn of the Century, Avant Garde artists in Paris looked at modern life unfolding around them for inspiration, rather than following academic guidelines. While dance already had a tradition as an art topic, artists now were more interested in the actual performances on the Parisian stages, from opera to cabaret, but they also focused on the various multicultural dances by visiting troupes, or even searching for them abroad. New styles were developed to capture the new interest in movement and new materials were used to underscore the interest in the modern world.

Art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo will present two virtual talks on Dance in Art. In this first session, we will explore artists including Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Paul Gauguin, Auguste Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec, Georges Seurat, Gino Severini.

Register online.

The second session will be on Feb. 3 at 1:30pm. Register for that session separately.
