Genealogy: Discover Your History

Genealogy: Discover Your History In-Person

Join us for a six-session hands-on class with Eric Migdal on genealogy. You can register for each one separately. Attend one or attend all the sessions. We will be providing laptops during the sessions for participants to do hands-on work using the Library's Ancestry database.

April 8: Tree Building: The first class will cover what genealogy is and how tree building can be started to learn more about ones family history. There will be hand outs of family group sheets and pedigree charts to work on and discuss.

April 15: Ancestry.com: The second class will be hands on for the patrons to start building an online tree using Ancestry. It will flow into how research will increase your chances of going back further in time and discovering more of their ancestors.

April 22: Gathering Documents: The third class will expand on the research aspect of genealogy covering places to find the information needed and the documents and records you should look for.

April 29: Understanding and Using Your Documents: The fourth class will expand on how to use those documents and records to expand the family tree and how to use the information  to get the most out of what you find.

May 6: DNA Testing for Genealogy: The fifth class will start with the understanding of genetic genealogy and the use of DNA testing to expand the knowledge of your family. It will highlight what DNA testing is, the different kinds of testing and the terminology associated with genetic genealogy. There will be handouts explaining the most common terminology and Share cM charts.

May 13: DNA Results and Making Contacts: The sixth class will expand on how to use DNA test results data to find out about unknown DNA matched cousins found after testing. This will include learning how to build mirror trees, finding contact information, making contact safely and effectively.
